Make the workmanship surpass the materials
When it comes to making jewellery, there are various techniques used. This can be hand-carved wax, then cast into shape like pouring jelly into a mould. Or it can be a printed resin, rather than hand carved. There is also purchasing pre-finished components manufactured by machine (or mass production) and assembly to make the finished product.
At Celestial Jewellery, we use older techniques, though these are not uncommon. Wherever possible, we start with stock gauge square wire, and manipulate the metal using techniques such as rolling, hammering, cutting, filing, sanding, drilling etc. This is thought to compress the metal, making it a harder-wearing material.
There is something very satisfying about making something from nothing, using these techniques. It takes longer, and is generally heavier than a mass-produced piece.
Everything from start to finish is completed in-house. From purchasing the loose gems and precious metal, to making the piece, to setting the gems into the piece, to polishing and finishing.
